Murat Kurnaz, born and raised in 1982 in Bremen as the son of Turkish immigrants, completed an apprenticeship as shipbuilder. When aged 19, he travelled to Pakistan to attend a Koran school , he was detained and taken to Guantánamo as a suspected terrorist. After five years of prison under inhuman conditions, he was finally set free in August 2006 and learned that the German authorities had long before known of his innocence without undertaking any steps to make possible his return. He now lives and works again in Bremen. |
