George Szirtes was born in 1948 in Hungary and after the revolutionary uprising in 1956 emigrated to England with his family . He studied Painting in Leeds and at Goldsmiths College.
He taught Free Art, History of Art and Creative Writing in various schools and colleges. For some years Szirtes directed a gallery and edited a small magazine for Poetry and Graphic Art together with his wife Clarissa Upchurch , herself an artist. After his return to Hungary in 1984 Szirtes began translating poetry, prosa and dramas from the Hungarian and was awarded the European Poetry Translation Prize and the Dery Prize. Presently, Szirtes teaches Poetry and Creative Writing at the Norwich School of Art and Design. In addition, he works for renowned English newspapers and magazines, as well as for the radio and television. In 2004 he received the prestigious Eliot Prize.
